Make an "Obnoxious Bodily Function" Noise Maker in the Name of Science

Update:  Emily knows that adding salt to things usually draws the water out of it and wondered if she could draw the water out of the goop.  So the kids put some goop in a baggie and covered it with salt and waited.  By morning, the baggie had lots of water in it and the goop became a shriveled up piece of blubber, looks like chewed up gum.

It all started so innocently.  LaPaz Farm, Martin's Zoo, and Ramsey Central all have been having fun experimenting with goop and slime (polymers).  We thought we'd take a turn, too.  We started off with old faithful goop.

Goop Recipe:

  • Stir 1/8 cup borax into 500 ml warm water. Allow solution to cool to room temperature.
  • In a separate container, stir 2 spoonfuls of glue into 3 spoonfuls of water.
  • Stir a couple of drops of food coloring into the glue mixture.
  • Add a spoonful of the borax solution to the glue mixture. Stir (if in a bowl) or squish (if in a baggie).

Ethan made a realistic looking fried egg.  Emily made a man with one claw hand and one regular hand.

We had fun "breaking" the goop and seeing it make a perfect straight break - weird and cool.

Here's another of Emily's funny men and Ethan's evil grin.

It was shortly after this that we discovered that you can trap a bubble underneath the goop and make it squish out to make a sound which, naturally, lead us to think about those toy things you can buy in the store that make obnoxious bodily function noises like a whoopie cushion.  We decided to try to make one ourselves.  I found a small votive type and cup and voila the kids were in heaven!  Just their kind of humor!
