Place Value

I was helping Emily learn how to say big numbers easily the other day.  I cut out 9 blue construction paper strips and wrote 1,000 etc on each strip then I cut out 9 slightly shorter strips of orange and wrote hundred numbers on them then 9 slightly shorter red strips with tens numbers on them and finally 9 small yellow strips with ones numbers written on them.  She could easily read these numbers.  So then I.....

placed the 3,000 strip, the 800 strip, the 20 strip and the 3 strip on top of each other to create one number, which she discovered was still read the same.  If she got stuck anywhere, she could just lift up the strip to see the zeros behind it to remind herself.

Then we played around and I turned the strips over and she drew one from each pile and created a new number.  She thought that was fun.
