Rocks and Minerals

Yesterday, we went to a local nature center to learn about rocks and minerals.

Here's our friends' website with more pictures from the outing.

The 3 types of rocks and how they are formed

Sedimentary rocks

Igneous rocks

Metamorphic rocks

I remember reading about taking core samples from cupcakes to show the kids how core samples are taken from the Earth and studied.  I decided it would be fun to try it on a sandwich with more possible layers than a cake.  So I googled it and came up with this.  Sounded fun!  We tried it last night but it didn't turn out as I had hoped.  I think the cakes would work much better.  The sandwich just all squished together and we couldn't tell each layer apart but it did do the trick and the kids understand about core samples, etc.

I wanted my sample to look like this but mine didn't.
