Cicada Changing from Nymph to Adult

Emily found this cicada on a branch off of our porch.  It was in the midst of changing from a nymph to an adult. Very cool!!!

From Moth to Egg to Caterpillar to Moth Again

Emily found this Giant Leopard Moth in our yard.

When she brought it inside, it laid lots of blue-ish green eggs.

Here they are hatching.

See all the baby caterpillars.

Here they are about three weeks later in our caterpillar habitat. They love to eat dandelion leaves.

getting big - I had to let about 100 go but still have around 100.

Toad, Frog & Tree Frog Tadpoles

a little toad Emily caught - she named him Tiny

toads we found in our koi pond

toad eggs in our koi pond

Emily brought a string of eggs inside and they hatched in a pickle jar

we have about 60 tadpoles in the jar now and they are growing bigger everyday

here is one frog that we raised from an egg - it's so small!!

we can't believe how small these toads are

we now have 15 of these teeny tiny toads

we found this treefrog on our sliding glass door

we found these two separately by the koi pond - they decided it was time to lay eggs

here are the eggs they laid that night

Northern Ringneck Snake

Ethan found this little snake in the backyard.  He brought him inside and wanted to keep him a few days so we set up a cage for him.  The kids played and played with him.  They make the poor little guy ride around on Fisher Price vehicles around the house.  Then one morning he was GONE!  He escaped!!  Glad he's a harmless snake but it is kind of freaky to have a snake loose in your house.  Three days later, we found the little guy in Emily's bedroom.  We then put him in a much better container with a panty hose lid so he couldn't squeeze through any more holes and slither away.  After a few days, we let him go free outside again.

Salamander Dissection (we found her dead in the pool)

Bees & Beehives

We got to watch a bee keeper open a hive and pull out a honeycomb frame and then cut it up for us to eat.  Yummy!

Butterflies

You can purchase caterpillars and the net cages for them at www.insectlore.com

lifecycle

Emily received a butterfly kit for her birthday - this is one of the caterpillars in the kit

caterpillars hanging from the lid of the jar

watching the caterpillar change into a chrysalis - COOL!

The caterpillar hangs upside down then it begins to bust out of its skin through its back. The skin splits up the back and out wiggles the chrysalis!

they hatched 8 days later

Flashlight Scavenger Hunt

We decided to go out one evening after it rained to see what we could find.  The tree frogs were so loud!

Another Dissection - cool findings http://www.scienceman.com/pgs/archive21_owlpellet.html

Owl Pellets are made of the indigestible parts from rodent, birds, snakes, moles, etc that owl eat.  After eating, the owls regurgitate the pellet.  Pellets are filled with bones, beaks and hair - very interesting to dig through!!

Hatching a Duck Egg

We are trying to hatch a duck egg in our incubator.  We have to turn the egg every 4 or 5 hours.  We marked one side of the egg with an X and the other with an O to help us keep track of our egg turning.  After two weeks of incubating and candling, we realized that our egg was not going to hatch.

The Praying Mantis Egg Sac We Hatched

This is a praying mantis egg sac.

Here is another with a few babies on it.

We put 3 egg sacs in a jar and waited for them to hatch. Eachsac has more than 100 babies in it.
